thriving art business

Whether you’re a talented painter, sculptor, visual poet, printmaker, photographer, or any other form of visual artist, there are common principles and strategies to building a thriving art business and your career success. In this post, we will explore the essential principles, strategies, and resources to help you transform your art efforts into a sustainable and prosperous art business and career.

To create a sustainable and thriving art business, it is crucial to understand the importance of embracing entrepreneurship, setting clear goals, and navigating the evolving art market, all while staying true to your artistic vision.

Establishing Your Artistic Identity:

In a busy art industry, if you want an art business that thrives, it is essential to stand out from the crowd.

The first step to establishing your artistic identity is to understand who you are – as a person and as an artist, and then what your art is about. This helps you with communicating, with your marketing and with how you present yourself.

A good place to start – aside from reflecting on feedback from others – is using a ‘personality assessment’and teasing out words and phrases that are most like you (this may sound crazy but it works! Here is one you can do for free.
From there it is a matter of understanding your target audience, and how you and your art connect with them. By leveraging your unique artistic voice, you can forge authentic connections with art enthusiasts and collectors.

Navigating the Art Market:

Understanding the art market is vital for any artist looking to build a successful business.

It’s important to remember that there isn’t one árt market’ Rather there are many different árt villages’ and within those villages, different markets too. Even when you determine whether you want to work with galleries, art fairs or online platforms, these all have their own art villages and market positioning within them.

Where do you and your art belong? And importantly where do you want yourself and your art to belong?

Understanding this can improve your connection and help you to strategically position your artwork, build relationships with art professionals, and effectively market your art to reach a relevant audience.

Pricing and Selling Your Art:

Determining the right pricing strategy can be challenging for many artists. Often Money Mindset is the issue (see the earlier post Unlocking Your Financial Success Through a Positive Money Mindset for more).

There are also practical concerns. Pricing your artwork, taking into account factors such as the cost of doing business (materials, time invested), market demand, and your artistic reputation.

Some commonly understood pricing methods include:

  1. Cost-Plus Pricing: Calculate the total cost of creating the artwork (materials, labour, overhead) and add a desired profit margin.
  2. Market-Based Pricing: Research and analyse the prices of similar artworks in the market. Set your prices based on what comparable pieces are selling for.
  3. Perceived Value Pricing: With this model you determine the perceived value of your artwork based on factors such as your artistic reputation, awards, and recognition as well as the perceived value your artwork brings to the buyer, considering emotional impact, uniqueness, and cultural significance.
  4. Square Inch Pricing: Set a standard price per square inch of the artwork, providing a consistent measure for pricing various sizes. With this method, you still need to use another method to know what the multiplying factor should be. This method is best used to extrapolate prices for different sizes, once you have a base price established for your most common size.

Building an Engaged Art Community:

Building a supportive and engaged art community is crucial for long-term success. Building an engaged art community is an ongoing process that requires dedication, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in connecting with others.

Here are some practical tips to help artists foster a supportive and vibrant artistic network:

Attend Art Events: Participate in art exhibitions, gallery openings, and cultural events to connect with fellow artists, art enthusiasts, and potential collaborators.

Networking Skills: Develop effective networking skills by being approachable, initiating conversations, and expressing genuine interest in others’ work. Exchange contact information to stay connected.

Online Presence: Maintain a strong online presence through social media platforms and art-focused websites. Regularly share your work, engage with comments, and connect with other artists and art communities online.
