Art Business Coaching for Visual Artists
We all have periods when we have so many ideas we don’t know what to do with them all. We may worry about not having enough time for them, we may absolutely thrive and engage in a fever of creating. As creative people, ideas strike often seemingly from nowhere. And the more ideas you have, the more you seem to have.
As Maya Angelou famously said;
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
But sometimes, the muse leaves, ideas dry up and we are left with no ideas at all.
Where sitting staring at a blank page or canvas leaves us …well… blank
You can’t force creativity.
Work somewhere else, take a walk somewhere that relaxes and inspires you, or clean up and declutter your studio. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can kickstart the creative engine. It could be as simple as moving to a different room, or as adventurous as exploring a new city. The key here is to break the monotony and spark new ideas. Changing environment can be like flicking the reset switch.
Studio visits, group exhibitions, and collaborative projects can all help you step outside of your block and be a valuable reset.
Set Small, Achievable Goals
It’s OK to not be making masterpieces or achieving big goals every single day. In fact, that’s probably impossible. But you can feel like you are with this simple tip.
Break down your big desires into small, achievable steps. If you are highly driven by achievement, break them down so far that you have daily goals, if you operate at a slightly more relaxed pace weekly or monthly can work.
Creativity can not live without the willingness to embrace risk. And risks don’t exist where mistakes are impossible.
Use techniques to allow your subconscious to help you. Journaling, meditation, hypnosis and visualisation are all great tools to open your creativity. Journaling is particularly helpful. Journal without criticism and see where the words take you.
💎 Valuable Tip 💎
Keep a creative journal to capture ideas in drawing and writing. Make it a part of your daily habit even if you only have 5 minutes.
❌ Mistake to Avoid❌
Forcing creativity – sometimes stepping back is necessary for inspiration to flow. Allow yourself time to sit, to think, to reflect, to do anything other than wonder why that page or canvas is still blank.
